Crohn's Disease Diet - Can Diet Help You to Stay in Remission?

Every Crohn's Disease diet that I tried, I had little success with them for quite some time. I thought it was not possible to control Crohn's Disease with diet alone. I did found out eventually that you can control Crohn's Disease with diet alone. There are several different diets to help Crohn's Disease, but one thing that will help you when trying to find a good Crohn's Disease diet is one that is based on unprocessed natural foods like fruit and vegetables.

Obviously there is more than that to a good Crohn's Disease diet as there are other things that play a part as well, but a good place to start is a diet based on fruit and vegetables that are largely unprocessed and unrefined. If you have a flare up you need to watch out for foods that have insoluble fiber, as this type of fiber can further irritate the inflamed tissue of the bowel and the digestive system.

Examples of these foods are things such as cabbage, nuts, seeds, whole grains that are not ground down, they all can cause problems if you have a flare up because they have a lot of insoluble fiber in them. Imagine your bowel or a section of your digestive system is inflamed, sore as well as very sensitive to food or anything else that passes through it. If a lot of insoluble fiber passes through the inflamed tissue it can be like rough sand paper and irritates the tissue, which can do more damage to the part of the digestive system with bad inflammation.

Citrus fruit is something else to watch out for. It can vary from person to person, but eating a lot of citrus fruit can negatively affect your Crohn's Disease. Your body will become cleaner on the inside when you eat a more natural and wholesome diet, your tolerance to citrus fruit will probably improve. This is something to be aware of and keep in mind so if you do have an issue you will know you have eaten too much citrus.

Avoiding things that are really processed and contain a lot of sugar, dairy or wheat will help you to have an advantage when trying to get your Crohn's Disease in to remission. Keeping meat to a minimum or cutting it out completely for awhile can also be a big help while your body heals. Meat triggers the inflammatory response in the body which can make inflammation worse, you want to avoid this when your body is healing.

Your diet may still need some changing to make it work well for you. If you have food allergies and you are not aware of them they may be making the symptoms of your Crohn's Disease worse. If these food allergies are not addressed you may find it hard to achieve remission. If the allergies are bad they will be a factor that is causing your health to be less than optimal.

If you follow the tips above for your Crohn's Disease diet you will be well on the way to helping yourself get in to remission. Using diet to get your health back under control is one powerful way to keep the use of drugs to a minimum or get rid of them for good, so they won't do damage to your body over the long term.
